Stephan James
Stephan James (born December 16, 1993, in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian screen actor known for bringing intensity and nuance to both historical dramas and contemporary stories. He first built momentum in television as a teenager, quickly earning attention for his grounded, character-driven performances.
James broke through internationally with Race, portraying Olympic legend Jesse Owens—a role that earned him the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor and cemented his reputation as a compelling leading man. He continued to expand his range with notable film work including Selma as civil rights icon John Lewis, When the Game Stands Tall, and Home Again, alongside earlier credits such as Perfect Sisters and Lost After Dark.
In 2018, he joined Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, further elevating his profile. That same year, he headlined Amazon’s thriller series Homecoming as Walter Cruz, earning a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
