Takashi Yamazaki

Takashi Yamazaki (born June 12, 1964, in Matsumoto, Nagano) is a Japanese director and visual effects supervisor whose crowd-pleasing spectacles have helped redefine modern blockbuster filmmaking in Japan. Celebrated for pairing emotional storytelling with cutting-edge VFX, he has earned major industry recognition, including an Academy Award and numerous Japanese film honors, while his films have generated hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide.

Yamazaki began his career in 1986 at the effects and animation studio Shirogumi, where he has remained a central creative force. He broke through as a feature director with the sci-fi adventures Juvenile (2000) and Returner (2002), drawing comparisons to Hollywood’s big-scale auteurs for his technical ambition and cinematic polish.

He later became a go-to filmmaker for high-profile adaptations, steering hits such as Always: Sunset on Third Street, Space Battleship Yamato, The Eternal Zero, and Stand by Me Doraemon, along with later projects like The Great War of Archimedes and Lupin III: The First. His 2023 kaiju epic Godzilla Minus One set new box-office benchmarks for the franchise, and Yamazaki’s team made history as the first Japanese crew to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. In 2024, he was also named to Gold House’s list of the 100 Most Impactful Asians.
