Terry Matalas

Terry Matalas (born December 11, 1975, in New Jersey, USA) is an American television writer, director, and executive producer recognized for shaping ambitious, serialized genre storytelling. Best known for his work behind the camera, Matalas has built a reputation for balancing character-driven drama with high-concept science fiction.

He rose to wider prominence as the co-creator and showrunner of 12 Monkeys (2015–2018), guiding the SyFy series across four seasons and establishing it as a standout in time-travel television. His leadership on long-form arcs and ensemble casts helped define the show’s identity and critical appeal.

Matalas later expanded his showrunning portfolio on major studio franchises, serving as showrunner for season four of CBS’s MacGyver (2020). He then took the reins on Star Trek: Picard, overseeing seasons two and three for Paramount+ (2022–2023), where his work connected legacy characters with modern Trek storytelling.

In addition to his writing and producing credits, he has appeared as himself in fan-facing and behind-the-scenes titles including Outatime: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine, The Ready Room, and The D-Con Chamber.
