Thomas Kail
Thomas Kail (also credited as Tommy Kail) is an American director and producer born on January 20, 1978, in Alexandria, Virginia. Celebrated for shaping contemporary musical theater, he became a key creative force behind the stage work of Lin-Manuel Miranda, helping bring new energy and cinematic pacing to Broadway storytelling.
Kail rose to prominence by directing both the Off-Broadway and Broadway runs of In the Heights and the cultural phenomenon Hamilton. His work on Hamilton earned him the 2016 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, cementing his reputation as one of the defining directors of his generation. In 2018, he was recognized with a Kennedy Center Honor.
Beyond the stage, Kail expanded into television, directing the acclaimed limited series Fosse/Verdon (2019), which brought him multiple Primetime Emmy nominations. He also appears in and is closely associated with several screen projects tied to the Hamilton universe, including Hamilton: One Shot to Broadway, Hamilton's America, and Hamilton: Reuniting the Revolution.
