Tony Gilroy

Tony Gilroy (born September 11, 1956, in Manhattan, New York City) is an American screenwriter, director, and producer whose work blends sharp political tension with character-driven suspense. Best known for writing, Gilroy has become a defining voice in modern espionage and thriller storytelling.

He helped launch the big-screen momentum of the Bourne franchise, penning The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). He later stepped behind the camera to write and direct The Bourne Legacy (2012), expanding the series’ world while maintaining its grounded, high-stakes tone.

Gilroy’s writer-director breakthrough came with Michael Clayton (2007), earning him Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He followed with Duplicity (2009), continuing his interest in morally complex professionals navigating systems of power.

In the Star Wars universe, Gilroy co-wrote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and later became the creator, showrunner, head writer, and executive producer of Disney+’s Andor (2022–2025). He also appears in industry retrospectives and talk shows, and has contributed voice work in select projects.
