Alan Arkin

Alan Arkin (March 26, 1934 – June 29, 2023) was an American screen artist whose career blended sharp comedy, quiet vulnerability, and authoritative presence. Born in New York City, New York, Arkin also worked as a director and musician, building a reputation for performances that felt both intelligent and deeply human.

Across decades in film, he became a familiar face in major titles and character-driven classics. He appeared as Bill in Edward Scissorhands, voiced Schmendrick in The Last Unicorn, played Detective Hugo in Gattaca, and brought warmth and wit to roles like A. “Peevy” Peabody in The Rocketeer. His credits also include Catch-22, Jakob the Liar, and an uncredited turn in So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Arkin reached a late-career peak with Little Miss Sunshine, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his scene-stealing performance as Edwin Hoover. He later continued to impress audiences in acclaimed projects such as Argo, reinforcing his status as one of Hollywood’s most reliable character actors.

Known as Alan Wolf Arkin (אלן וולף ארקין), he was also the father of actors Adam Arkin, Anthony Arkin, and Matthew Arkin, leaving behind a lasting artistic legacy on and off screen.
