Craig Gillespie

Craig Gillespie (born September 1, 1967, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian-American director whose work spans film, television, music videos, and commercials. Known for a sharp visual sensibility and character-driven storytelling, he has built a career moving fluidly between formats while keeping a distinctly cinematic touch.

Gillespie first drew wide attention with Lars and the Real Girl (2007), a warmly offbeat drama that showcased his ability to balance humor and empathy. He later shifted gears with the stylish remake Fright Night (2011), demonstrating a knack for genre filmmaking and crowd-pleasing energy.

His profile rose further with I, Tonya (2017), a darkly comedic, propulsive biographical film that cemented his reputation for bold tone and inventive pacing. In 2021, he brought that same flair to Disney’s Cruella, delivering a fashion-forward origin story with a punk edge.

Beyond narrative features, Gillespie has appeared as himself in Made in Hollywood, reflecting his visibility within the industry and popular film media.
