Daniel Kwan
Daniel Kwan (also credited as Dan Kwan; 다니엘 콴; 关家永) is an American director born on February 10, 1988, in Westborough, Massachusetts. He is best known as one half of the filmmaking duo the Daniels, working alongside Daniel Scheinert on boldly imaginative, genre-bending projects.
Kwan first gained wide attention through inventive music videos, helping shape the early 2010s visual language of pop and electronic music. His directing work on Foster the People’s “Houdini” (2012) and DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What” (2013) drew major industry notice, including Grammy Award nominations.
Transitioning into features, Kwan co-wrote and co-directed the surreal comedy-drama Swiss Army Man (2016), establishing the duo’s signature mix of absurdity and emotional sincerity. That approach reached a new peak with Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), a cultural phenomenon that became A24’s top-grossing release and earned Kwan Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
Beyond directing, his screen appearances and credits include Balance, Learned Behavior: Special Features at Work, and the documentary companion piece Almost Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Everything Everywhere All at Once.
