David Mackenzie
David Mackenzie (born May 10, 1966) is a Scottish director known for restless, character-driven storytelling that often sidesteps easy genre labels. Based in Scotland, he also co-founded the Glasgow production outfit Sigma Films, helping champion ambitious filmmaking outside the usual industry centers.
Across roughly a decade of features, Mackenzie built a reputation for bold tonal shifts and intimate intensity, directing films such as Young Adam (2003), Hallam Foe (2007), Perfect Sense (2011), and Starred Up (2013). His work frequently blends realism with heightened emotion, making each project feel distinct while retaining a clear authorial edge.
In 2016, his modern Western Hell or High Water debuted at Cannes before its U.S. theatrical release, widening his international profile. That same year he also became attached to Damnation, a television pilot developed for Universal and USA Network.
Mackenzie later brought large-scale historical drama to streaming audiences with Netflix’s Outlaw King (2018). Among his notable credits is Life in 24 fps (as Matt 2), reflecting a career that continues to move fluidly between formats and expectations.
