Ed Harris

Ed Harris (born November 28, 1950, in Englewood, New Jersey) is an American screen actor and director known for intense, grounded performances across prestige drama, thrillers, and mainstream hits. Also credited as Edward Allen Harris, he has built a career defined by authority, emotional restraint, and sharp character detail.

Harris earned major critical recognition with acclaimed turns in Apollo 13 (as Gene Kranz), The Truman Show, Pollock, and The Hours (as Richard Brown), collecting multiple Academy Award nominations along the way. His filmography ranges from early standouts like Creepshow and The Right Stuff to later favorites including A Beautiful Mind (as William Parcher), Enemy at the Gates (as Major König), Absolute Power (as Seth Frank), and A History of Violence (as Carl Fogarty).

Beyond acting, Harris has also stepped behind the camera, directing the biographical drama Pollock and the Western Appaloosa. On television, he drew praise for Empire Falls and won a Golden Globe for portraying John McCain in Game Change.

More recently, Harris reached a new generation as the Man in Black on HBO’s Westworld, a role that brought him an Emmy nomination and reaffirmed his reputation as one of American cinema’s most reliable leading men.
