Isaach de Bankolé (also credited as Isaach De Bankole, Isaac De Bankole, and Zachari Bankolé) is an Ivorian screen actor born on August 12, 1957, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Raised in a family of Yoruba heritage with roots in Benin and grandparents from Nigeria, he later built a career defined by international range and distinctive presence.

In 1975, de Bankolé relocated to Paris to complete his final year of lycée, initially focusing on academics with graduate studies in physics and mathematics. He also trained in aviation and obtained a private pilot licence. A fortuitous meeting with French filmmaker Gérard Vergez redirected his path toward performance, leading him to study at the Cours Simon drama school in Paris.

De Bankolé became widely recognized for collaborations with auteur directors and for characters that blend restraint with intensity. His credits include Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth (Cab Driver Paris) and Coffee and Cigarettes (segment “No Problem”), as well as Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, The Limits of Control, Lars von Trier’s Manderlay, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

From art-house landmarks to contemporary ensemble films like The People We Hate at the Wedding, Isaach de Bankolé remains a compelling figure in world cinema, celebrated for his quiet authority and cross-cultural versatility.
