James Wan
James Wan (born February 26, 1977, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia) is an Australian director and producer whose name has become synonymous with modern franchise horror. He helped launch the Saw and Insidious series and originated The Conjuring Universe—widely regarded as the top-grossing horror franchise, surpassing $2 billion worldwide. Wan is also the founder of the film and television company Atomic Monster.
Wan broke through with his feature debut in 2004, turning Saw into a global phenomenon that ultimately earned more than $1 billion. After a challenging stretch, he reignited his momentum by directing Insidious (2010) and its 2013 follow-up, then expanded his impact with The Conjuring (2013), a critical and commercial hit. He returned to direct The Conjuring 2 (2016) and continued shaping the universe as a producer.
Beyond horror, Wan proved his blockbuster range with Furious 7 (2015) and DC’s Aquaman (2018) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). With multiple billion-dollar releases and total box-office takings in the billions, he ranks among the most commercially successful directors of his generation.
