John Gilroy

John Gilroy (born June 24, 1959, in Santa Monica, California) is an American screen artist best known for his work as a film editor, shaping the pace and tension of modern studio thrillers and action films. His credits span acclaimed titles such as Michael Clayton, The Bourne Legacy, Warrior, Pacific Rim, Nightcrawler, and Suicide Squad.

Raised in a creative family, Gilroy is the son of sculptor and writer Ruth Dorothy (Gaydos) and filmmaker Frank D. Gilroy. He is also part of the well-known Gilroy filmmaking circle, with brothers Tony Gilroy and Dan Gilroy (his twin) both working as writer-directors. Although he initially studied government at Dartmouth with law school in mind, he ultimately pivoted toward film, relocating to New York and taking early jobs outside the industry before landing assistant-editor work in the mid-1980s.

After serving as an editorial assistant on films including Peggy Sue Got Married and Gardens of Stone, he moved into lead editing with The Luckiest Man in the World, directed by his father. Over time, Gilroy became a sought-after collaborator, including multiple projects with Tony Gilroy—most notably Michael Clayton, which brought him major awards attention—and later with Dan Gilroy on Nightcrawler.

Beyond editing, he has appeared in screen-related credits such as Narc: The Visual Trip (as himself) and is also associated with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (additional voices). He has a daughter, Carolyn (born 1990).
