Matt Johnson

Matt Johnson (also credited as Matthew Johnson) is a Toronto-born Canadian screen artist known for acting and for shaping distinctive, genre-bending independent films. Born October 5, 1985, he has built a reputation as a multi-hyphenate filmmaker—often writing, directing, producing, and editing projects in addition to performing in them.

Johnson broke through with his feature directorial debut The Dirties (2013), which premiered at Slamdance, and followed it with Operation Avalanche (2016), a Sundance premiere where he also appears on screen as “Matt Johnson.” He later brought his sharp, satirical style to BlackBerry (2023), which debuted at the Berlinale and went on to earn major recognition at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2024.

Beyond features, he co-created the cult comedy series Nirvanna the Band the Show (2017) and continued to pop up in varied roles, from Diamond Tongues to The Heirloom. As an actor, his credits also include Kazik Radwanski’s Anne at 13,000 Ft (2019) and Matt and Mara (2024), reinforcing his range from deadpan comedy to grounded drama.
