Michael Shannon

Michael Shannon (also credited as Mike Shannon and Michael Corbett Shannon) is an American screen actor born on August 7, 1974, in Lexington, Kentucky. Known for an intense, unpredictable presence, he has built a career that moves confidently between prestige drama, mainstream studio films, and character-driven independent work.

Shannon first appeared on film in Groundhog Day (1993) as Fred, later gaining wider notice with 8 Mile (2002) as Greg Buehl. His range is reflected in credits spanning Pearl Harbor (as Gooz Wood), Vanilla Sky (as Aaron), World Trade Center (as Dave Karnes), and Jonah Hex (as Doc Cross Williams), as well as the thriller Abandoned (as Renner).

Critically, Shannon is a two-time Academy Award nominee for Best Supporting Actor, recognized for Revolutionary Road (2008) as John Givings and later for Nocturnal Animals (2016). He has also earned Golden Globe and SAG attention for 99 Homes, alongside a Tony nomination for the Broadway revival of Long Day’s Journey into Night.

Beyond film, he became a standout on television as Nelson Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire, and he frequently collaborates with filmmaker Jeff Nichols across multiple features. Shannon’s work as a producer, musician, and theatre director further underscores a creative profile that extends well past the screen.
