Ron Howard

Ron Howard (also credited early as Ronny or Ronnie Howard) was born March 1, 1954, in Duncan, Oklahoma, and grew from a familiar face in American living rooms into one of Hollywood’s most respected directors. He first broke through as a child performer, including a notable appearance tied to The Twilight Zone, and became widely recognized as young Opie on The Andy Griffith Show. Along the way, he also appeared in the hit film musical The Music Man.

As a young adult, Howard transitioned smoothly into feature films, earning major attention with his role as Steve Bolander in American Graffiti. He soon became a TV icon again as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days, while continuing to act in films such as the western The Shootist. His on-screen legacy still surfaces through archive-footage appearances in retrospectives and specials.

Howard’s career took a decisive turn behind the camera with his directorial debut on Grand Theft Auto, and he later stepped away from weekly television to focus on directing and producing. His filmography spans crowd-pleasing fantasy and drama, including Willow, Apollo 13, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind.

Honored with the National Medal of Arts and inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, Howard remains a rare talent whose influence bridges classic television, blockbuster filmmaking, and modern screen storytelling.
