Stephen Hillenburg

Stephen Hillenburg (also credited as Stephen McDannell Hillenburg and Stephen Hilleburg) was an American screen artist best known for his writing and creative leadership on animation. Born on August 21, 1961, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he later became a marine-biology teacher—an unusual background that would help shape his most famous work.

Hillenburg created Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, premiering in 1999, and served as a key guiding voice as writer, director, and producer. The series grew into one of the longest-running animated shows in U.S. television, celebrated for its offbeat humor, colorful characters, and ocean-inspired worldbuilding.

His influence extended beyond the series into major franchise projects, including The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, where he also contributed voice work such as the Parrot and other small roles. He was featured as himself in the documentary Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants, reflecting his lasting impact on modern animation.

Stephen Hillenburg died on November 26, 2018, leaving behind a creative legacy that continues to entertain audiences worldwide.
