Sigourney Weaver
Sigourney Weaver (born October 8, 1949, in Manhattan, New York City) is an American screen and stage actress celebrated for helping redefine what a blockbuster heroine could be. Often cited as a trailblazer for action-led science fiction, she became a landmark figure in modern cinema through her work across film, television, and theater.
Weaver’s most iconic role is Ellen Ripley in Alien and Aliens, a performance that earned major awards attention and cemented Ripley as one of the medium’s defining protagonists. Her range extends from sharp comedy to prestige drama, with standout turns in Ghostbusters as Dana Barrett and Galaxy Quest as Gwen DeMarco, alongside early screen work including Annie Hall.
In 1988, she made awards history by winning two Golden Globes in the same year—one for Gorillas in the Mist as Dian Fossey and another for Working Girl—and received Academy Award nominations for both. She later won a BAFTA for The Ice Storm and earned a Tony nomination for Broadway’s Hurlyburly.
Her filmography also includes 1492: Conquest of Paradise as Queen Isabella, Snow Cake as Linda, and major franchise work such as Avatar, underscoring a career defined by versatility and cultural impact.
