Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme (born October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels) is a Belgian screen icon whose athletic style and charisma earned him the nickname “The Muscles from Brussels.” Born Jean-Claude van Varenbergh, he began martial arts as a boy after his father encouraged him to build strength, training in Belgium under respected instructors and rising through competitive karate and kickboxing.

By his late teens, Van Damme had compiled an impressive fight record and set his sights on action cinema. After an early trip to Hong Kong fueled his movie ambitions, he relocated to Los Angeles, juggling English classes with day jobs before landing small opportunities through connections in the fight and film worlds. His breakout arrived when he impressed a producer with his skills, leading to Bloodsport—a modestly budgeted film that became a major hit and launched him as a new action star.

Van Damme quickly graduated to higher-profile roles, including Cyborg, Kickboxer, Hard Target, Nowhere to Run, and Universal Soldier: The Return. He reached a commercial peak with Timecop, then navigated personal upheaval and uneven box-office years before refocusing and returning with titles such as Replicant, Legionnaire, and Inferno.
